Do You Tip for a Massage in Westchester, NY? An Honest Answer from a 27-Year Therapist

This is a real question asked by real people — and it deserves a straight answer.

After 27 years as a massage therapist in Westchester County — working at top spas, country clubs, gyms, and through my own in-home practice — here's the honest breakdown.

Scenario 1 — In-Home Massage from an Owner-Operator

If your massage therapist comes to your home and they own their own business, a tip is generally not expected. The rate reflects the full value of the service including travel. That said — if your therapist did exceptional work, a tip is always appreciated. It will never be expected, but it will make their day.

Scenario 2 — In-Home Massage from a Company Employee

If the therapist works for a larger company, tipping is genuinely appreciated. A one-hour massage can become two and a half hours of actual work time when you factor in loading equipment, driving to your location, and driving back. In this case, tip generously.

Scenario 3 — Spa Massage in Westchester

If you're at a spa, tip — and tip well. The average charge at a top Westchester spa runs $125–$150/hour. The therapist typically receives less than 30% of that fee. On a busy day of 5 massages at $35–$40 per session, that's $175–$200 for a full day of physically demanding work.

A 15–20% tip makes a meaningful difference. And tip in cash whenever possible — some spas take a percentage off credit card tips before passing them to the therapist.

The Short Answer

In-home, owner-operator — not required, always appreciated. In-home, company employee — yes, they've earned it. Spa massage — definitely yes, 15–20% minimum, cash preferred.

And if you're looking for high-quality in-home deep tissue massage in Westchester where tipping is never required — you know where to find me.
