The Massage Secrets Nobody Tells You

By Doug O'Connell, LMT | 27 Years Experience, 25,000+ Sessions | Westchester County, NY

"How do you do this all day without getting tired?"

I hear it almost every week. Usually right after someone tells me they gave their partner a massage, started strong, and were exhausted in five minutes. Hands burning. Shoulders up by their ears. Massage over.

Meanwhile, I've done this for 27 years and more than 25,000 sessions, and I still finish a full day ready for the next one.

There are a few things professionals know that almost nobody else does. Nobody hides them on purpose. They just never get explained to regular people. It's time to tear back the curtain.

Secret #1: The Energy Doesn't Come From Your Hands

Most people assume I have unusually strong hands. I don't.

My hands, forearms, and elbows are tools, and you have to learn to use them correctly. But the energy doesn't come from the tool. It comes from the body: legs, core, posture, and gravity.

Watch a beginner and you'll see them trying to power every stroke with their fingers and thumbs. Watch a professional and you'll see something different. They lean. They shift their weight. They let gravity do most of the work.

Once you feel that difference, you can't unfeel it. It's one of the first things I teach, and it's usually the moment people say, "Wait, that's it?"

Secret #2: Your Hands Can Read A Person

This one surprises people more than anything.

When you know what to pay attention to, the person on the table tells you everything without saying a word. Their breathing changes when you find the right spot. A shoulder drops when the pressure is right and tightens when it isn't. Muscle either gives under your hands or pushes back.

Most people giving a massage miss all of it, because they're too busy wondering if they're doing it right. Learn what to look for, and the massage starts guiding you.

Secret #3: It Runs On Trust

A good massage isn't just technique. The person on the table has to let go and stop guarding. That only happens when they trust the person working on them.

The giver earns that trust one stroke at a time: steady pressure, full attention, no surprises. Break it with a sudden jab or rushed hands, and the person tenses right back up. Earn it, and everything gets easier.

That's why learning this with someone you care about means more than learning a technique.

Secret #4: The Giver Gets Something Too

People assume the person on the table gets all the benefit. Not true.

When you're working on someone, your full attention is on them. No phone, no to-do list. I'll admit, the time I'm working is often the calmest part of my day. It's almost like a moving meditation. Most people never expect that from the giving side, and it's one of the first things they notice.

So Is It A Gift Or A Skill?

Both. Some people have a natural feel for this, and they'll always be better at it than others. That's true of tennis, cooking, music, anything.

But everyone can learn the basics, and everyone can get better. The only thing standing in the way is that nobody shows you how.

What You Learn In Two Hours

My massage lessons are a two-hour, hands-on introduction in your home. I bring one table and teach:

  • Types of lubrication and when to use each

  • Safe body mechanics for the person giving the massage

  • Table setup and adjustment

  • Basic strokes, and how to apply them — pressure, pace, and reading the person you're working on

  • Supervised practice

  • A full practice session at the end, followed by my critique

Two people is ideal. Up to four can join, taking turns on the table, so practice time and my critique are a little shorter for each person. Everyone leaves with a solid foundation, and you can book more lessons if you want to keep building.

What It Isn't

These lessons are purely recreational. They're about learning something new and sharing it with the people in your life. They don't replace professional massage. Think of it as something you do between sessions, not instead of them.

Want To See The Rest?

There's more where these came from, and they make a lot more sense with your hands on a table than on a screen. I teach in-home massage lessons throughout Westchester, NY, so you learn massage at home, with someone you care about. Lessons are $500 on weekdays and $550 on weekends.
