In-Home Massage For Getting Back To Normal After An Injury (Or Surgery)

By Doug O'Connell, LMT | 27 Years Experience, 25,000+ Sessions | Westchester County, NY

In-home massage belongs in recovery earlier than most people think. The standard advice after an injury or surgery is to give it time: rest, wait, let the body handle it. That advice isn't wrong. It's incomplete. Time alone doesn't clear out everything that builds up while an area heals, and nobody mentions that part when they tell you to be patient.

Why "Just Give It Time" Isn't The Whole Answer

Rest matters, especially early on. What gets left out is that healing tissue tightens, scars, and binds to the structures around it, particularly when the area gets no hands-on attention once the worst has passed. Time gets the area working again. It doesn't always get it loose and moving the way it did before.

What Happens As You Heal

Right after an injury or a procedure, the body is busy with the early stage of healing, and the right touch is light: just enough to help circulation without working against what the body is already doing. Later, once a doctor or physical therapist has cleared it, deeper work matters: breaking up scar tissue and adhesions, working out the tightness that formed around the injury, and getting the muscle to lengthen again instead of staying short and protective.

Skip that stage and a lot of people end up with an area that healed but never moved quite the same. I've written about what that looks like with sciatica and IT band pain. The pattern shows up constantly.

How I Work With Where Someone Is In Recovery

I work within whatever the doctor or physical therapist has cleared. This isn't a replacement for either one. It works alongside them. Early on, that means light, careful work. Further along, it's Lengthen, Release, and Lock It In: lengthen the restricted muscle, release its hold, then lock it in with a stretch, either a PNF stretch or a traction stretch, so the muscle learns to rest at a longer, looser length instead of snapping back to the protective one.

I meet each person at the stage they're in, not with a generic routine.

Why In-Home Matters During Recovery

After surgery or an injury, driving and sitting in a car are often off the table, and getting to an appointment is a project on its own. This is a house-call: I come to them, bring the table, sheets and oil, and need about 7 by 10 feet of floor space. Whether they're in Eastchester, Scarsdale, or anywhere else in Westchester, a traveling massage therapist takes the hardest part of the appointment off their plate.

What To Expect

Each session is tailored to where the person is in their recovery and designed around their specific needs, drawing on 27 years and more than 25,000 sessions of experience.

Give Someone Recovering A Real Next Step

Recovery is slow, and the attention fades long before the healing does. The get-well cards stop, everyone assumes the person is back to normal, and it takes someone paying attention to see that they aren't yet.

If someone you know is easing back into normal life after an injury or surgery, a gift certificate from Doug O'Connell LMT meets them where they are, in their own home, at their own pace. One session, or several.
