Massage as Maintenance: Why Waiting Until It Hurts Costs You More

By Doug O'Connell, LMT | 27 Years Experience, 25,000+ Sessions | Westchester County, NY

Most people call me for the first time when something already hurts. That's a fine reason to call — I'll take care of it. But it's not the only reason to call, and waiting for pain to be the trigger is exactly why the same tight spots keep coming back every few months instead of staying resolved.

What Happens Between Sessions

Tension doesn't show up overnight. It builds quietly — from sitting at a desk all week, from workouts, from the way you unconsciously hold your shoulders when you're stressed. None of that registers as pain at first. It just accumulates, day after day, until one day a muscle that's been tightening for months finally announces itself.

Why Waiting Doesn't Actually Save You Anything

You don't wait until you blow your engine to change the oil — you maintain your body the same way, especially one that's carrying you through a full week of work, workouts, or just being on your feet. Skipping regular work doesn't mean nothing's happening in the meantime. It means the tightness keeps compounding, unaddressed, until it's a bigger job to undo than it would've been three months earlier.

How I Work On This

Maintenance sessions aren't just a lighter version of a pain-relief session. I'm still doing the same real work — lengthening the muscles that have been shortening from daily use, releasing them from the tissue around them, and using a stretch to lock in that longer, looser resting length before it has the chance to reset back to short and braced. The difference is timing: I'm clearing out that buildup on a regular basis, before it turns into the kind of pain that sends you searching for a massage therapist at 11pm.

What This Usually Looks Like

Early on, weekly or every other week works best. Frequent, closely-spaced sessions build momentum — the muscle gets reinforced toward that longer, looser length before it has a chance to drift back into the old pattern between visits. That's what moves problem areas, not sporadic one-offs spread too far apart.

Once those areas settle into the new baseline, sessions can spread out — every few weeks, once a month, whatever fits your schedule and what your body needs. There's no fixed timeline here — it depends on you, not a formula. If you're going to invest in this, front-loading the sessions early is the fastest way to get real results, then easing off once you're ahead of it instead of behind it.

This is my honest read on what works best — not a sales pitch for a standing slot. What you do with it from there is up to you.

What to Expect

Maintenance work feels different from crisis work. You're not walking in doubled over and walking out relieved in one dramatic session — it's steadier, and the payoff shows up as fewer flare-ups over months, not a single before-and-after moment.

You can see the full range of work I do, maintenance or otherwise, on my services page.

If you're tired of the same tight spots coming back every few months and want to get ahead of it instead of waiting for the next flare-up, I come directly to your home with everything needed — whether you call it in-home, outcall, or traveling massage, it's the same idea: real therapeutic work, delivered where you actually are. No commute, no spa, no wasted time.
